Blue Lake

One of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the region. The stunning blue-green water surrounded by larches makes this a fall favorite.

Maple Pass Loop

Panoramic views, world-famous trail

7.5 miles 2,150 ft gain July - October

A classic North Cascades loop with jaw-dropping views of Lake Ann, Rainy Lake, and surrounding peaks. Arguably the best day hike in the region.

Cutthroat Lake

4 miles RT 400 ft gain June - October

Gentle trail through forest to a beautiful alpine lake with Cutthroat Peak towering above. Great for families and those seeking a mellow day.

Goat Peak Lookout

Hiking Season Guide

Spring (April - May)

Valley floor and lower elevation trails are accessible. Wildflowers begin blooming. Rivers run high with snowmelt. Watch for muddy conditions.

Summer (June - September)

Prime hiking season! High alpine trails open as snow melts. Wildflower meadows peak in July. Long days allow for bigger adventures. Start early to avoid afternoon heat.

Spectacular larch season! Golden needles transform the high country. Cooler temps and fewer crowds. Watch for early season snow and shorter days.

Winter (December - March)

Most trails are snow-covered. Snowshoeing and backcountry skiing replace hiking. Some lower elevation trails may be accessible. Check avalanche conditions for any mountain travel.

Hiking FAQ

The Methow is home to deer, black bears, moose, mountain goats, and a recovering wolf population. Bird watching is exceptional with over 200 species. Always practice wildlife safety—carry bear spray and know how to use it.

Absolutely! The Methow Trails system offers gentle paths suitable for all ages. Popular family hikes include the Twisp River Trail, Patterson Lake loop, and various trails from Sun Mountain. The valley floor trails are perfect for younger hikers.

A Discover Pass is required for parking at state recreation sites. A Northwest Forest Pass covers national forest trailheads. Overnight trips in wilderness areas require free self-registration permits available at trailheads.

Lower elevation trails are accessible April through November. High alpine terrain typically opens in late June or July, depending on snowpack. September and October offer spectacular fall colors and fewer crowds. Always check current conditions before heading out.
